Fall Family Photos 2025: What We’re Wearing

Every fall, I manage to talk my family into “just one more round” of photos — which always turns into me chasing a 6-year-old with a hairbrush, bribing a 3-year-old with fruit snacks, and begging my husband to please stop asking, “are we done yet?” five minutes in.

This year feels extra meaningful because we’re taking our photos in Southwest Colorado, at our second home. It’s been such a special place for us — somewhere we’ve slowed down, spent time outdoors, and made memories as a family. The bittersweet part? It’s on the market right now, so this might actually be our last round of family photos here. That makes these pictures feel like a little time capsule for us. Some of our past Fall photos:

How I Pick Outfits Without Losing My Mind

  • Pick a vibe. For Colorado, I went with casual western — something laid-back and natural, but still polished enough for the Christmas card.

  • Choose a palette. Olive green is our family’s “signature” color. We wear it all the time, it looks good on everyone, and it feels earthy and cozy for fall.

  • Coordinate, don’t copy. Matching outfits = no. Coordinated colors, textures, and patterns = yes. It keeps things feeling effortless instead of staged.

  • Think about your walls. Weird rule, but I always choose outfits that will look good framed in our home. (Because nothing’s worse than investing in photos that don’t fit your vibe once they’re hanging up.)

Affordable + A Few Splurges

I keep things budget-friendly with Amazon, Old Navy, and Walmart finds — because kids grow like weeds and I’m not about to drop a fortune on clothes that won’t fit by next spring. But I do sprinkle in one or two “special” items, like a western hat or a good pair of boots Grey photographic cat funny meme. Totally not required, but they make me feel put together — even when I’m hiding granola bars in my purse to keep the kids happy.

What We’re Wearing

  • Me: Patterned maxi skirt, sweater (that I'll wear cropped) tall boots, and my “pretend I’m a cowgirl” hat.

  • Grady (husband): Black Levi’s, corduroy button up, Timberlands (my man's fave), and a classic cognac belt

  • Asher (6): Black Levi’s + little combat boots. We're layering a hoodie under his button up to make his look a little more him and casual. His only request: “make me look cool.”

  • Emmy (3): A sweet olive fall dress with bell sleeves + toddler combat boots. She’ll probably twirl through the entire session.

The Reality Check

I wish I could tell you family photos are a magical, stress-free experience for us. But the truth is: someone’s shirt will be untucked within minutes, at least one meltdown will happen, and there will absolutely be snack negotiations. Still, when I look back at the photos, I don’t see the chaos. I see us. I see this exact season — a 6-year-old with a cheeky grin, a 3-year-old who thinks spinning counts as posing, and two parents who are just trying to freeze time for a second.

This year, I’ll also see Colorado — the backdrop of so many family memories. And maybe our last photos here before we say goodbye to this little home of ours. That part makes these photos even more special to me.

So here’s to snack bribes, cowboy boots, and catching at least one shot where we’re all looking in the same direction. Stay tuned for the outcome!

👉 If you’re planning family photos too and need inspo (or just want to shop what we’re wearing), I linked everything on my LTK here. Affordable finds + a couple splurges you can easily swap for budget-friendly versions. Because real families deserve real-life outfits that look good on camera and on your walls.
